Mallards at the Wharf Restaurant

  • For four consecutive summers (2007-2010), Bethany worked as a waitress for Mallards at the Wharf Restaurant in Onancock, Virginia. Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority

  • In Fall 2007, Bethany ran for and was elected the Social Chairwoman on the Executive Board of James Madison’s Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. The position was a 2-year position that began in the Spring of 2008. Throughout her term, Bethany planned and organized celebrations for the members of her sorority while also coordinating events with other campus groups and clubs. She functioned as a liaison and worked with third-party vendors and sponsors within the Harrisonburg, Virginia community to host events. The opportunity to work and plan events with external constituents helped Bethany to further her communication skills. Panhellenic Rho Gamma

  • From Spring 2007 until Fall of 2008, Bethany served as a Rho Gamma for James Madison’s Panhellenic Council. In Spring 2007, Bethany along with 30 other Rho Gammas, attended leadership workshops to train for the week of Recruitment. During Recruitment, Bethany provided guidance, mediation, and mentoring to potential new members of the campus’s sororities, while directing and supervising students throughout the week. Bethany also had to disaffiliate her membership in her own chapter to ensure presentation of unbiased information to potential new members.

Attributable Quotes

  • “Bethany was my assistant during the year that I was Head Social Chairwoman for Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority and helped me plan over 35 events throughout the year. Not only did she help me come up with fun ideas for on-and-off campus events, she helped me book the events, correspond with other organizations, and budget each aspect of the event. The following year, she became Head Social Chairwoman and did an amazing job! I am sure that she will put forth the same enthusiasm and dedication that she had throughout this position toward any career that she pursues.”

-Leilani Ching, Executive Assistant, Stella McCartney

  • “Bethany Alvare was my Rho Gamma during Fall 08’ Recruitment.  From the very first day, Bethany displayed leadership and enthusiasm that encouraged me to be myself.  In an environment of unfamiliar faces it is normally hard to feel comfortable, but Bethany focused on everyone’s needs and made sure that everyone felt part of the group.  She gave equal attention to all of the members of our group and encouraged every girl to turn to her for help.  Her support through the process pushed not only me, but every member of our Rho Gamma group to keep our heads held high while she assured us everything would work out in the end. If it was not for all of her hard work and dedication to the process, I may not have had the positive and fulfilling experience through recruitment.”
